Sydney, Australia: Where the Journey Truly Began

I should probably start by explaining that this adventure was booked as our very first group trip, organized through Travel with Mandy Loo. While the group traveled together overall, my husband John and I were the only couple who chose the land-and-sea tour through Princess Cruise Lines, which added a unique layer to our experience right from the start.

Touchdown in Sydney

After landing in Sydney, everything moved smoothly. Once we collected our luggage and cleared customs, we met our wonderful tour guide for the week as we explored the land portion of our vacation—Mel with the Bob Wood Cruise Group. She introduced us to our transfer driver, let us know we’d meet up later, and sent us on our way to the hotel. We were quickly whisked away to a beautiful historic hotel called The Paradox.

Despite arriving quite early, they welcomed us with an immediate check-in—always a win after a long journey. The building itself is stunning, full of classic architecture, paired with thoughtful modern updates throughout the interior. You can truly feel the history while still enjoying all the comforts.

We dropped our bags, grabbed a quick shower, and headed out to explore.

First Taste of Sydney

The weather greeted us with a mix of warmth and drizzle—nothing that could dampen our excitement. We walked toward the water and made our way around the iconic Sydney Opera House. Unfortunately, the Rocks Markets were closed that day, but just being in the area and soaking in the views felt special.

Eventually, it was time to grab a bite to eat and attend our group meeting to go over plans for the next day. With jet lag catching up to us and a big day ahead, we called it an early night.

Bags Split & Bound for the Outback

After a great night’s sleep, the next morning started reorganizing our luggage—since one bag would be staying behind in Sydney while we continued onward.

We enjoyed a very nice buffet breakfast at the hotel before boarding the coach and heading to the airport. Our next destination? Uluru.

Just a short two-hour flight later, we landed in the heart of Australia’s Red Centre—stepping off the plane into the scorching desert heat of Uluru. A complete contrast to Sydney, and an unforgettable transition into the next chapter of this incredible journey.
